With no shortage of popular tourist destinations, it can be hard to know where to start with Argentina. The country’s beaches are not as well-known or understood as some of its more famous landforms, but we know the score. Here are three Argentina beaches we guarantee are worth the visit.

1. Las Grutas

Located down south in Patagonia, Las Grutas is one of the best Argentinean beaches for those that value a little peace and quiet. This is not the sort of party beach you might find in Rio de Janeiro, Ibiza or Miami. As with all things Patagonia, the beaches of Las Grutas are pristine, natural and unspoiled by man. Think fine white sand as far as the eye can see, and not a whole lot else. This is a beach for contemplation and relaxation, so if that’s your thing, head here. The nearest town is San Antonio Oeste, a popular stop-off for those travelling to Puerto Madryn.

2. Mar del Plata

Las Grutas sound a little quiet for your liking? No matter, Mar del Plata is for you. Mar del Plata is a lively and happening coastal town and beach resort, located close to Buenos Aires. It’s not exactly New York City, but this is pretty urbanised for a beach environment. Expect lots of fellow tourists as well as a wealth of shops, bars and restaurants. Travellers of all kinds are well catered for here, and activities range from boat trips to golfing. Active families with grown-up children or sporty young couples, this may be the beach for you.

3. Pinamar

If you like the sound of both, how about a compromise? Pinamar is located not far from Mar del Plata, but is considerably quieter. It offers a central location close to the Argentinean capital without being quite as all-out crazy as its more famous neighbour. Families with young kids will appreciate the peace and quiet, though there’s a good social and nightlife, too. Pinamar also caters to the luxury traveller, with a plethora of high-end and five-star options to choose from in terms of accomodation and dining. At around a three-hour drive from Buenos Aires, this is also one of the easiest Argentina beaches to get to.
